What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is the grinding of the teeth, typically accompanied by the clenching of the jaw. In most people, the teeth grinding is mild enough not to be a health problem; however, some people suffer from significant bruxism which may include the following symptoms: jaw pain, headaches, and/or ‘chomping’ at night.

Bruxism can cause indentations in the teeth, wear of the biting surface, and cracks in the teeth. Bruxism often occurs during sleep and a common sleep disorder. In a typical case, the teeth grind between themselves laterally which ultimately result in damaged teeth and/or tooth loss.

Treatment

Ongoing management of bruxism is based on minimizing the abrasion of tooth surfaces by the wearing of an acrylic dental night guard. Millennium Periodontics will take impressions of your mouth to ensure an ideal fit.
