Periodontal Disease and Systemic Health

Gum tissue supports your teeth and jawbone while creating a barrier against bacteria. When plaque is left to accumulate on your teeth, it hardens into tartar and releases bacterial toxins that irritate gum tissue, which can cause an oral infection. In advanced stages of gum disease, oral bacteria can infiltrate the bloodstream, leading to systemic infections. Advanced periodontitis is associated with worsening symptoms in people with diabetes, respiratory disease, and heart disease and research suggests it significantly raises the risk of kidney, pancreatic, and blood cancers in men.

A recent large study by National Institute of Health researchers suggests the most common bacteria responsible for gum disease is also associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The analysis revealed that older adults with signs of gum disease and mouth infections at baseline were more likely to develop Alzheimer’s during the study period, likely due to Porphyromonas gingivalis. The bacteria can migrate from the mouth to the brain, releasing enzymes called gingipains that can destroy nerve cells, thereby leading to memory loss and eventually Alzheimer’s.

Healthy Gums, Healthy Bodies!

Gum disease is complex disease caused by several types of oral pathogenic bacteria in combination with a potential viral component. The bacteria may differ from one person to another in specific types and numbers. Periodontal disease is also influenced by many risk factors, including alcohol, stress, smoking, genetics, diabetes, and hormonal changes associated with pregnancy and menopause. As such, maintaining oral and periodontal health can be challenging. All of these variables need to be identified and managed to achieve successful treatment outcomes. Our vast understanding of periodontal disease and belief in integrative and natural medicine practices helps us deliver more effective periodontal treatment, optimal outcomes, and long-term maintenance.

We understand oral health is a window to overall health!
